Grading Comedy with Style: Building the Look of Klipdrift’s “Must Be Klippies”

Playful, irreverent, and unmistakably South African — the new Klipdrift “Must Be Klippies” spot embraces humor while pushing for a fresh, cinematic aesthetic. Director Alan Irvin of They Films, together with colorist Zama Mnyakeni of Left Post, set the tone early, steering away from the over-familiar “warm bar scene” in favor of something sharper and more contemporary. The aim was a look that felt effortless on screen: refined, natural, and true to what was captured in camera.

To build this visual identity, Zama’s grade leaned into the natural contrast of the imagery. Practical lighting originally cast in deep red was subtly transformed into a rich golden hue, which paired seamlessly with the cooler fill light. The shift brought depth and vibrancy, while avoiding the heavy-handed warmth so often associated with bar interiors.

Collaboration across departments ensured the humor always stayed front and center. Through careful relighting in the grade, the audience’s attention is guided precisely to the offbeat performances — amplifying the comedic beats without distraction.

The result is a playful, polished look that mirrors the spirit of the brand: bold, characterful, and unmistakably “Klippies.”
